Observer's paradox

Acrylic & Wood & Skin glue & Charcoal on canvas

Observer's paradox is the idea that our presence as observers influences the subject of our observation; that a truthful or accurate view of something is impossible because our gaze will indiscriminately affect that something.

This work - conceived as a limited edition painting, a series consisting of 13 pieces - is made using an old piece of wood. During the process of registration, parts of it broke off or caved in, as the wood lost its structural integrity. Even though the texture of both sides of the plank seems identical in the different paintings based on them, they are not.
